Recent Food Adventures

IMG_1529

While I've recently been away from my laptop I've been lucky enough to try a couple of new restaurants and revisit another. There's nothing more fun to me than trying something new and I thoroughly enjoyed all three experiences. Yum!

March Hare Pub - Cheadle Hulme

I pass this pub everyday on my way to work and they always have sandwiches boards outside advertising the different offers they have going on. One of them being Pie Day. When my parents came to visit and asked where we could go to eat that wasn't a chain I immediately thought of this pub.

For starters Topher and I shared this delight of cheesy breadness - garlic bread.

IMG_1531

This was amazing! It tasted even better than it looked which was certainly an achievement.

For mains I had steak and chips which were cooked to perfection.

IMG_1532

And Topher had the Beef and Merlot pie which he kindly stabbed the top of before I could get a photo. He said it was delicious. I definitely need to get a pie the next time we visit. The Fisherman's pie sounds amazing.

IMG_1533

And finally for dessert we had the peanut butter and chocolate cheesecake. Perfect size portion and very tasty. I'm glad I didn't really look at the rest of the dessert menu as I would have had a difficult time making a choice. As soon as I saw peanut butter and chocolate I was sold.

IMG_1534

All the food we picked was incredible so we will without a doubt be paying a second visit in the future.

Moose's

IMG_1596

A not so hidden treasure in Manchester's city centre, Moose's is an American style breakfast diner found tucked away on a side street behind Primark. Arrive early to avoid having to wait outside for a table like we did. Brrr!

My friends & Topher have all been before so it was finally my turn to sample some American style pancakes. They have plenty of other meals on the menu but I insisted on Pancakes. The kind of pancakes that I cannot finish as they are incredibly sweet but I pick them anyway knowing full well of this fact. You've got to do it once right?

IMG_1598

Moose Granola and chocolate peanut butter pancakes. This was really nice but the maple syrup definitely wasn't needed and the oranges were handed over to Topher as it was just too many different flavours for me. Though oddly enough, neither of us could taste peanut butter. Strange. But I did enjoy what I could eat and now that my childish antics have been fulfilled, I can happily return and order something a bit more sensible like Topher did here.

Piccolino

Having visited Piccolino in Bramhall just before Christmas, I was looking forward to returning again for a colleagues birthday dinner last week.

IMG_1686

I had struggled between two items on the menu last time so knew exactly what I would be ordering when I revisited. The seafood risotto.

IMG_1687

As always, risotto is always much more filling than it looks so I was completely stuffed after eating this. Yum! Therefore when choosing dessert I picked what I thought would be a lighter option.

IMG_1690

I forget its Italian name but this dish is basically espresso and amaretto served over a scoop of ice cream. Scrumptious! It was just the thing I needed and it cooled me down as I was baking under the outdoor heaters. Another place I'll be visiting again.

Where have you eaten recently?

Nailed it!

Now I'm no stranger to disaster, particularly in the kitchen. I've improved greatly over the last two years moving from jars of sauce to cooking from scratch but it's not without the occasional fail here and there. Part of having a blog is showing the best bits of your life so it's not every day you see the disasters. So what am I going to do today? I'm going to show you my "Nailed it" moments.

The time I tried to make Slimming World ice cream

You needed an ice pick to eat it.

My first attempt making pancakes

IMG_0839
Still delicious though not instagram worthy in the slightest.

The time I incinerated the roof of my gingerbread house.

IMG_0525
And to be honest it was a miracle it got to that stage with the state of the "bird feed" like gingerbread. Yes that is supposed to be gingerbread.

IMG_0508

I figure I'm just not allowed to make desserts. When making Topher's birthday cake one year, I tipped it upside down to get it out of the pan and it fell into a heap onto the plate.

IMG_2502

Luckily I managed to style it out...

That time I forgot to defrost the chicken...

And the just plain clumsy.

Pasta
IMG_1768
IMG_1767

That was achieved by dumping the bag of pasta on the electric hob, melting the bottom and releasing the pasta when I picked it up.

Not to mention countless other failures not documented - including the worst and only cheesecake I've ever made. The thing is, it's all about trial and error. You're rarely going to get it right the first time in the kitchen. Things do go right once in a while and they will only get better and better the more you practise. Just a week after the gingerbread house shenanigan, I managed to successfully make gingerbread cookies. So proud!

So what are your nailed it moments? Or are you a Nigella in the kitchen?

Current Obsessions

Since I've been stuck in a rut with ideas for blogging recently, I thought I'd let you know what I've been up to recently.

Reading
The Mistborn book series

IMG_0860

The Mistborn series is definitely filling a Harry Potter esque series shaped hole in my life right now. In a nutshell, it's about a street girl called Vin who has special powers and joins a team to overthrow the evil ruler that has enslaved her people. It's nice to find a book like this that has a girl as the main point of view and I'm excited to read the remaining 3 books.

Watching

New Girl
newgirl

All about a girl called Jess who catches her boyfriend cheating on her so moves in with 3 guys she met on the internet. Funny situations a-go-go. The idea has been done before, people in their late 20s/early 30s living together etc but I have to say I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time. The cast gel really well together and there's a fair few situations I haven’t ever seen before. It’s not often I can watch something over and over in such a short period of time.

I just love it, and I want Zooey Deschanel's  wardrobe. Will definitely have to do a style post on Jess soon! Plus I want to live in their loft. It’s gorgeous! But I’m not surprised considering I’m a sucker for exposed brick.

The only sad thing is that I'm completely up to date with America now so I have to wait every week for the next episode. I'm used to finding shows that are way ahead so I can just binge on them but this is going to take some patience.

The Amazing Race
AmazingRace-520x388

This definitely has to be my top game/reality show ever. It's an American program where teams of two race around the world for a million dollars. Each leg they have different tasks and the last team to get to the end of each leg is out. I would love to be on this show, it looks like such an adventure! Plus, Phil the host is awesome - especially his eyebrow (see below)!

Me and the bf love this show and have watched all 21 seasons. There's always a team you love and a team you hate so we spend plenty of time yelling at the laptop. I need to see if these are available on DVD!

Lusting over
Modcloth

02112013_Nautical_Styles_Hero-Reg-desktop

Ah Modcloth, you're so out of my price range but I just can't help myself but look. The clothes and accessories are so cute and quirky - completely my style. I guess I will just have to wait until I'm rich to be able to shop there! For now, it's all about the window shopping.

Craving
Pancakes

IMG_0836

Maybe it's because I haven't had them in so long but since pancake day I have not stopped craving pancakes. I used to have them every day for breakfast as a kid and really miss that. Definitely going to make some tonight!

What are your current obsessions?

Pancake disaster

Now I know I'm no Nigella but Pancake day definitely proved it!

Due to lack of time etc, the bf and I got these ready made shake and make mixtures that you just need to add water to.

IMG_0832

So with the idiot proof mixture we started off pretty well.

IMG_0835

Cheese filled pancake!

IMG_0838

The bf even managed to flip one

Until disaster struck:

IMG_0839

The rest turned out as well as these did. But it's ok because they still tasted awesome and that's the main thing isn't it?

One day I will make photo worthy pancakes from scratch.

Did you have more of a successful time making pancakes on Tuesday?

Christmas markets are here!

One of the great things about Manchester at this time of year is the Christmas markets. They are awesome. And now I can go during the day on a weekday and actually be able to walk around without being crushed! Me and the bf went today for the first time this year.

Photo-bomb time!
